I finally pulled the trigger on this one. It’s a controversial piece for sure and much has been mentioned about the relative size, thickness, writing on the dial, bracelet size etc. etc.

I never gave this watch much thought until recently; every time I visited a Rolex AD my eyes would invariably focus on the DS because it has such a commanding presence.

 About a month ago on the suggestion of the salesman I put one on my wrist. Way too big & heavy I thought, definitely not suitable for my small wrist. The salesman said it looks great (of course he would) and once sized correctly, it would make a world of difference. I didn’t quite believe him but went back again a few days later and then again for a third time to have it on my wrist and compare it with the new Sub. Never before have I been so indecisive and although the new Sub.c was nice and normal compared to the DS, my thoughts thereafter became an obsession: the beautiful domed sapphire crystal, the perfect bracelet with the incredible glidelock, the blue lume and just the massive display of mechanical engineering par excellence!

 

So today I brought this baby home with the correctly sized bracelet, which is easily fine tuned with the glidelock. The salesman suggested removing the flip lock altogether (I don’t dive anyway) and another link and it was such a transformation with the clasp perfectly centered in the middle of the wrist. Never had such a good fit with any other Rolex before!

 

So here are some quick pics. I took. For those considering or on the fence with the DSSD, IMO it overwhelms and doesn’t disappoint but if you see one for sale on the CM in 2 weeks time you’ll know I'm unable to live with it or my left shoulder has slanted in relation to the right one. J

Not elegant, but very attractive, at the end.

I would not go for it, because I have many other priorities, but I tried it and loved this lovely monster, for what it is... A monstruous watch.

I suppose I had a change of mind with it but I'll let you know whether I can live with it in a couple of weeks... you never know.

I am certain that most of us, at dome point have regretted buying a certain watch after a short time....

But on the other hand, these experiences became lessons...

but for my wrist, it was just soooo deep. Its not the watch i dislike....its my lack of wrist.

how wearable it is once the bracelet is sized correctly.

to my 16600...eventhough someone offers an insane price for it. It's discontinued and unless Rolex does revive it, which I don't see it happening, I don't see selling it or trading it for another beauty. It's rarely that I see it in the preowned market these days where I'm at...mostly them subs or daytonas....

One thing about the SD I like so much is the non cyclop date and as you say is far less common than the subs.

Congratulations, the watch looks really great on you.  I am sure you will find it a very reliable companion for years to come.  I've always been somewhat surprised at the divisive views on this one because I've always found it quite charming on the wrist.  Yes it's a bit of a brute, but it was purchased to be super reliable and virtually indestructible so it fits the bill quite nicely.  I do hope you end up liking it more and more with time.  All the best with your new DS.

I hesitated with the Deep-sea for months myself, but like you I seem to gravitate towards it when I’m out looking at watches, I never did pull the trigger myself because I was influenced by all negativity around this watch ( well...I learned my lesson on this one...don't pay attention to the negative stuff and to decide on my own if I like or not)

I think my wife got tired of me looking at it and talking about it all the time, so she got it for me on Fathers day this year . After sizing it and wearing for a few months, all the my concerns with the things I’ve been hearing about regarding the “bracelet taper, distracting inner ring and balance” went out the window…non issue for me. it’s a great watch and wears Fantastic!

on the head with your comment.This is exactly what happened to me.Once I had it sized and was wearing it, I wouldn't have wanted it any other way.I guess this is a watch you have to own to fully understand how awesome it is.

BTW, it looks great on your wrist and is a definite keeper .......and so is your wife.
