Having seen such an enormous response to the vintage vrs modern thread, and on Nicolas's idea of examining what we like about modern Rolex.... lets ask what is your favourite modern (say last 5 - 10 years) Rolex, and why you like it.
I'll kick off with naming the two that I love.
1) Simple. Plain. But brilliant. Explorer I, 114270.
2) Quirky, funky and different. Rasta Milgauss
I have never had a YM on my wrist, but will have to try one given so many people seem to love them.
If i had to choose one it would be the Explorer. The Ranulphg Fiennes of the Rolex stable.

The Yachtmaster: An elegant and original interpretation of an iconic model, theSubmariner.
Its sparkling platinum dial, and the red writing which gives life to the dial are just amazing, mermerizing.
Since these 2 ... Black Hole, nada, niente, rien, nothing, zip, kaput...
Maybe the GMT II Ceramic bezel?
Maybe...
Best,
Nicolas;
I have tried on SO many times and each time I reject, but it just keeps calling. I think the lugs are the issue for me. I wonder what i would think if i used a Nato.
It is a crazy watch, and crazy is good often. Really surprised to see MV above the YM for you.
As for the lugs, on the MV, I do get what you mean... I had the same problem, and still have, by the way, but I can live with it.
On a Nato, this is a Bomb, as the Nato corrects a bit the visual impact of these big lugs, which are truly too large for the bracelet.
Best,
Nicolas.
All the best
Big Duke.

Green, Yellow, Orange, Red, Black...
There is just a bit of white because this brother Rasta Milgauss comes from Swizerland!
Tssss....
Ciao Maaaaaan.

I suspect some here won't consider the Freccione, which is a fantastic watch, by the way, as a Modern Rolex...
Best,
Nicolas.

)Isn't Yatchmaster II fantastic?

You're absolutely right, the Dayto falls into the category, and I forgot it because I had the novelties in mind, and the latest one doesn't do nothing for me...
But in SS, the Dayto is still the Dayto, I mean the ref 116 520.
A watch which made a lot of people dream, an icon.
Still, I prefer the 16520, less bulky, more elegant than the 116 520.
Best,
Nicolas.
But I really don't like vintage Rolexes. I know, to each his own and I understand some people love to have a rare vintage watch or a whole collection. It is a watch with history and they just won't make a few thousand watches extra. So as for 'collectibility' I can understand the hunt.
But once you have them ??? I tried years ago wit a 1680 from the end of the 60's and a 5513 from the early 60's. Everytime I wore one I had the feeling I was wearing a 50$ Chinese copy. It just feels so cheap made. The riveted bracelet from the 5513 was the worst thing I ever had on my wrist. A 50$ Chinese fake felt even better. Movements which don't wind as smooth as I was used too ...no, nothing for me.
Now take a Patek 2499, totally unreachable for me but this 50 years old Patek still feels like a top notch watch. I has the same quality and finishing as a complicated Patek from the year 2000. And that kind of quality is something I miss in vintage Rolex or Panerai.
Now that you know I will always prefer a modern Rolex I'll answer the question with ...... the Yachtmaster I and the sub 16610Lv. Can't decide between these 2. But almost all the other sport Rolexes are fine too , as long as it is made after more or less 1995 ;-)
