Just starting to get interested in Champagne. With an eye towards ramping up quickly, I picked up a copy of The Champagne Guide by Tyson Stelzer and recently read Bursting Bubbles, by Robert Walters, that profiles a few elite independent growers. The latter is an excellent read, and I recommend for anyone with a passing interest in wine.
Interestingly, the industry appears to have a lot in common with the watchmaking industry, from the standpoint of industrial concentration (with some overlap in the case of LVMH). Additionally, there seem to be a number of legacy prestige brands of widely varying price and quality, and a number of exceptional growers who remind me of a Journe or a Voutilainen.
That being said, I've discovered Egly-Ouriet which is head-and-shoulders above the other champagnes I've had. I started with the Brut Tradition, and have the late disgorgement bottling and his 100% Meunier wine as well but have not had the time to enjoy them yet. I seem to prefer Pinot-dominant wines (Egly and Bollinger as examples) over Blanc de Blancs, but I need to try a wider variety of the latter to truly know. I've also yet to dabble with Blanc de Noirs.
Any other Egly fans here? What other Champagnes do my fellow Purists recommend? Any that you find over-rated or recommend avoiding?
Thanks!
Brandon
