I guess I'll just pull off that piece of tape on the back of SBGW001 that says "save for Art" and wear it tonight. smile

Cazalea

I owe a debt of gratitude to you . . .

. . . and Khalil Sheikh for being my second and first mentors, respectively.  I'd been aware of GS for a long time, but never handled any in person until Khalil brought his collection to one of our local get-togethers in '07, and then you with your collection the following year at a Purists gathering.

[cazalea's SBGW001, Dr No's wrist, August '08]

I did want the first Grand Seiko to be new as a token of my personal appreciation and estimation for the Manufacturer, much the same as collectors of the independents support their favorite watchmaker.

Indebted,

Art

No worries

I always enjoy reading your writings, just well written and reflects a great deal of wealth of knowledge and passion.
Grand Seiko gave me a new scope to the world of horology. why good, solid, beautifully built watches must be expensive?! G.S. proved it should not. that's why I got it. I honestly cant find a better value...no wait, the term "value watch" is associated with watches that are compromising in one or more aspects of the watch to have a more accessible price point. but these G.S. are not compromise, they are beautifully built.
So Grand Seiko proved to me at least, is that you can have a solid, pure, three hands watch with a reasonable price. I just dont know why the Swiss brand just don't do the same?

The reason could well be societal, Ali. Respect for tradition . . .

. . . and value are deeply rooted in Japanese culture.  Grand Seiko is nourished by the nation of Japan, much as a child is sustained by a parent.

Cordially,

Art

You are spot on, and that's what friends are for.....

 By: KIH : February 18th, 2014-08:18
... you are spot on about GS craftsmanship - I have posted here many times how diligent they are about watchmaking as well as case making and how much time and efforts are put into it.  Especially the case (movement, too, though) should be appreciated in the way each one is created (15 times forging and heating, etc.) - AT THIS PRICE RANGE, is simply amazing.  They confessed that it was priced too low, but they did it anyway.

And, Art, you are such a good friend and no problem at all on my side.  Obviously I am closer to SEIKO manufacture than you are smile

Nice pics, Art.

And Congrats to Ali.  Welcome to the best cost/ performance world smile

Best,
Ken

Thank you Kin

Funny thing is, one of my friends is not too much fond about Seiko just because its a "Seiko"...the funny part is that he drive and LOVE his "Nissan" GT-R smile
Oh I see that you are close to Seiko? then one question, my 44GS is bought used, unfortunately the bezel is scratched, and it shows and I can feel it through my nails. so do you think I should polish it, or just live with it?

oh and Art, my second GS is the 130th anniversary one. and my last would be the Hi-Beat one if it got re-issued. then my GS chapter will be closed properly.

I don't see...

.. why or where "Seiko" is not good enough for your friend.....

I am closer to Seiko physically (Made in Japan), but in such a case, if you cannot bear wearing a bit scratched watch, you should contact the closest Seiko service center because polishing is really the key to make that case, next to forging, and you don't want it to be ruined by untrained "street" watchmakers.

Again, congrats!

Ken

Oh No No!

I aint gonna let random individual to polish my watch thats for sure! just wanted to know if its possible to restore it back. since its possible, then I will leave it that way until maybe in the future when it really need a polish...yes, I can live with a scratched bezel ( I think I cant actually haha).

Yes, it is possible!

Try to get it done at the next servicing time.  It will come back like new smile

Enjoy!

Ken

The next time you see . . .

. . . 'The God of Adjustment', Ken, please tell him about my '65 Sea Lion, which Dad wore daily for thirty eight years.  I had it tested a few weeks ago: gaining 3 seconds a day in one position (dial down), and very close to that on my wrist.  This, from a watch that's been serviced thrice in five decades.

I'm wearing it with pride today.

Art

I am convinced, Art

And I have been for a while, now.  I just need to figure out which is the "right" GS for me, as I am thinking I will collect only one.

Best,
Respo
