Since we are on the subject; Resonance
Controversial initially, now perhaps more broadly accepted.
But if we ignore the physics this reference also presents itself as a very unique design. For non watch people I’ve observed the Resonance to be very alluring, but in no way intimidating (this may be due in part to the case which looks like steel and the muted or unflashly dial).
It will be interesting to see what 2020 brings us with the new Resonance. A new movement we all know will come but I wonder about the dial and case.
Chronomètre à Résonance. Platinum. White Gold Dial. 38mm. 2003. The Résonance was the second serially produced watch of FPJ and is to me, as everyone and their dog has produced a Tourbillon, THE Journe. (Others will differ in opinion on this statement, no offense intended it is merely my opinion).

I tend to agree that this probably must be the signature piece of Journe.

What a capture! One photo to encapsulate Journe DNA perfectly.
Will be near impossible to improve on the balance of the dial and layout of the movement, and I wait with apprehensive anticipation for what the new version will become.
One day I hope to land one of the Pisa edition Resonances, such a beautiful dial combination.

I’m not sold on the Pisa. I like the contrast on the dial for sure, however I think the charm of the early grainy dials outweighs anything that has come after.

With your beautiful picture and your description is just spot on! The Resonance will always be THE signature FPJ watch to me. And it strikes a perfect balance between being a significant piece of horology and a very wearable watch. The watch that has it all!
I am as excited as you are, to see the new piece in less than a year from now. The big question is, if it will feel relevant to own both? I hope so

Controversy?
Dear Jay, may you shed some light about the controversy youmention in your post?
To me, the original Resonance was the watch that brought FPJ to my (very limited) attention, and there was only admiration for the ingenuity of the resonance movement and the unique dial. Still it is the Journe I wish to add to my collectiom one day. Preferrably in 38mm with yellow gold dial.

In terms of the controversy it was centered on whether or not the watch did what it claimed.
There were questions about whether the phenomenon of resonance could exist in the wristwatch. Some objectors questioned if the rotational force of the two balances was strong enough to induce resonance. And then others, or maybe the same objectors, suggested that if something was indeed occurring this was perhaps due to aerodynamics given how close the balances were to each other (and not resonance).

My engineering background is not nearly sufficient to comment on the resonance phenomenon - I tend to trust the inventor. The real test for me would be if the seconds hands of the two movements actually stay in sync over the whole reserve de marche. If this is the case, then I'd argue the objective was achieved. Can anyone here comment on this?

For the short time I had a Resonance the seconds hands did not always move in sync.
Though to be fair they did not stray far from each other. This was one of the reasons I did not keep this piece.
Mileage will vary it seems with these.
Mine has been pretty much spot on. However others have said similar to you, and others still have found larger variance.
The struggle I assume is first in the regulation. It’s need to right and perfect.
Also, and here’s another question for Christian’s list (sorry Christian), I have heard chatter about brass being a better facilitator of the resonance phenomenon than gold and a quote to this extent being attributed to FPJ directly.
But it’s chatter, second hand information. However it seems like an odd thing to say (or acknowledge) given that the number of gold movements would likely far outweigh brass.
The question of how the resonating complication might misbehave in practice always interested me...
In cases where the two movements don't sync perfectly, I wondered if there's any consistency or predictability in how they might (mis)behave -- for example, if there are predictable patterns such as, "They two movements may deviate from each other by as much as 5 seconds in 24 hours, but then they'll start to sync more closely together for awhile before deviating from each other by 5 seconds again."
The answer may be, "No, the resonating complication's functionality is truly binary: Either the resonating complication works perfectly so that the watches are in perfect sync, or else the two movements function completely independently of each other. There are no other possibilities, such as 'partial resonance,' in which you'd notice any relationship between the two movements."

This is one watch that I truly missed and
have owned several times in different variation. But every time I let it go because it always' fell sick' and needs servicing which adds up the cost of maintaining it. It seems like the latter Resonance do not have such issues.
Still, I do miss it.
