CS or Octa Auto Reserve
Hello,
I am new to the forum and will travel to Geneva this Friday and plan to visit the F. P. Journe boutique.
I love the CS, its clarity, simplicitiy and precision but I also like the added comfort of the large date offered by the Octa Auto Reserve. The CS seems to receive more public acclaim. I will obviously spend some time with both in the boutique and decide on the spot but I would appreciate feedback from any of you.

The CS definitely - IMO one of the 2 signature watches of the brand..
and so very true to its objective - being a superb chronometer. The other signature watch being the Resonance.
for me... its definitely the octa
i own an octa rdm 38mm and its just such a comfortable watch to wear. today I had a chance to try on a friends cs 40mm and other than the 40mm not being a very proportionate size, feeling big and flat, its too thin as well with the crown digging into the hand. the octa has a good width though so the crown doesn't bite into the skin. i hope the following pictures help and would recommend you try both watches and see which one fits you better and sings to you. Regardless of the model, I would recommend the 38mm over the 40mm.
From an aesthetics angle, they both are good looking watches to me with the octa edging out the cs somewhat. the big date and cool 5 days PR also work for me too.
40mm case is not my cuppa. even though i do have a large wrist that can wear it fine, its just not proportionate to my eyes.
and the fatter bigger case and lugs on the 40mm just dont work for me

diggin into my wrist... flatter and the worser for it in this case. the first thought is why not make the crown smaller? but then
it may be tougher to wind it, it being a manual wind watch? so not an ideal solution...
both contain movements with pedigree and both invenit et fecit. the cs movement does look just a bit more tastier though
so my verdict is it looks great but not a comfy watch to wear and 40mm FPJ cases are just not for me
both are good lookers with the octa design appealing more to me
Hope this helps and do note all this is just mho and you have got to figure it out for yourself this assessment not taking into account what you have in your collection currently and what you intend to get in the future. Eg. if you say you intend to buy the resonance next year, then go with the CS. but if you say i just want one good Journe to start and may not ever buy another, then the Octa rdm just might be it.

Agree on the 38 mm RDM
Wearing mine today and almost everyday. I also own the CS too, but in 38 mm which is another option. I also find the 40 mm CS too big and flat compared to the 38mm Octa. Octa is visually and physically more comfortable to me, though again the 38mm CS maybe your solution. But above all, the Resonance is the best choice, although with Journe watches you simply cannot go wrong whatever you decide..

Well the crown will still extend beyond the case on the CS no matter the case diameter because the width is the same, but at least the 38mm CS appears less flat to me and sits better on my wrist. I have never experienced any digging in of the crown discomfort you refer to. Maybe I just don't wear my watches that tightly. I like both of them
My pick:Octa Auto Res. 40mm
Clean dial, big date,PR indicator,5 day PR,auto wind with lovely 22k gold rotor. 40mm is perfect for me and crown does not dig into the wrist. Accuracy isn't an issue here and although I haven't compared it to a CS, I've never had to adjust the time whilst it's being worn.Great watch to wear in rotation due to the 120hrs. power reserve.
From a purist point of view the CS sets the benchmark but for practicality the Octa Auto Res. is there for a purpose.
To each his own and whichever one you go for, your pick is the right one.

For this kind of "simple" watches
I usually prefer simpler and cleaner dial. Here my first pick is CS, followed by the original Octa RDM. To me both are true classics.

40mm CS doesnt work for me. Too flat on my wrist and the case takes away the details on the dial. 38mm CS absolutely perfect on my wrist. Mind you that I did not even think I would opt for a 38mm (40mm was my ideal size.)
Trying one on MAKES the difference as it did to me.
The Octa Auto looks fantastic. I have not tried one on to make a fair comment but I have observed them to have a thicker case. I would assume that its thick case would off set the large diameter (relative to the 38mm CS and thinner case).
Wind the CS is such a joy and that would be a plus for me; plus the accuracy is astounding.
The date on the Octa Auto is tempting as it is practical for my everyday use and the weight of this watch is quite hefty comparing to the CS, which is a plus for me as well.
To tell u the truth, I am in quite a dilemma myself now! Damn!
