On complicated watches, you have to take into account the usual german movements architecture which tend to add multiple layers. On the other hand... they also create this beautiful feeling of depth.
On simple watches, I think that the trend was a bit opposite: the watches are more slender, more thinner. Look at the Grand Lange 1.
