Sorry Mark
The question was simply the old vs. the new. The original or an evolution? I prefer the original and I have very hard to see any situation where it is the opposite.
I think there is more substance in what I say than the caricature you make of it.
There is no absolute right nor wrong, just personal preferences. Apologies if I came across too bluntly.
I wonder why oh why this is such a touchy subject…
Beyond the very topic that we discuss (Datograph) but as you are enlarging the debate, I would add that I can turn your argument upside down, when you write that nowadays it is the vintage legitimacy which is considered automatically as best. I would say that it is the lack of understanding of history in the latest production of new pieces that is a problem, especially but not only, when attempting to emulate those very original vintage pieces. We see this time and time again, even with the "best brands" such as Patek Philippe. For example, I have nothing against reedition and inspiration from the past if they are done in the spirit of the original pieces. Only too often do we see confusing offers that are a contradiction in terms when compared with the original vintage piece that they want to emulate or draw inspiration from (additional date window. automatic movement and the like…) Yes, some sense of respect of history, call it vintage if you want, matters. Well, at least it matters for me (and Nico)
