My recollection is that the Langematik Perpetual was well received, but as you said, it did not receive the same prolonged attention as certain other models did. I recall that the most frequent criticism was about the leap year placement and presentation.
Here are a few things to consider, thinking back to that time. First, although I don't remember exactly which month in 2001 Lange introduced the Langematik Perpetual, the events of September 11 may have muted any greater jubilation. Second, Lange's marketing team made a huge mistake by never more forcefully highlighting the pushbutton that advances all functions by 1 day. Very few people knew that function existed -- a function that was incredibly helpful and not found in other watches. Third and finally, there was nothing truly groundbreaking about the movement (since the Sax-0-Mat movement had been around for several years already), and there was nothing especially innovative or remarkable about the dial. I think the single-push corrector (that Lange never highlighted) was the most innovative feature!
I am biased, though, because I was more excited about this watch than many other people were at the time.
