Peugeot was considered the French Mercedes for a long time and looking to Africa and the 404s and 504s that are still doing sterling service there many decades later is a testament that it's not only a fanboy statement (never actually owned a French car).

As for luxury cars, it's a matter of French post WW2 tax policy, which penalised luxury cars, making it non-competitive.

As for Facel Vega, the cars were pretty but the engineering behind them was relatively primitive compared to say Citroens of the time and the build quality was more akin to British Leyland. Strong engines, though - a predecessor of the muscle car era, if you wish.
