Depends on the driving dynamic you want

Depending on how enthusiastically you are going to drive the car, that might help determine which model. By the other posts in this thread, it sounds to me like you’d prefer to stay in the “automatic rear wing” era of the 911. The 964 will have you be mindful of the rear engined characteristics the most. Progressively, the heavy rear characteristics were made less prominent through to the 996. In my mind, the 997 was made a bit more visceral again, although still more stable than the 993(not that the 993 is bad in any way, just the benefits of newer suspensions and lots of electronics). I don’t have significant experience with 991 and younger cars. This is all relative, of course—all 911’s offer a special experience. Some want a 911 for looks, prestige, and heritage. Others want a 911 for the rear engines challenges—efficient weight distribution for breaking, challenge of controlling the pendulum effect oversteer, etc. There are also the quirks like the pedals and learning how to heel/toe with them. I guess it’s analogous to why we buy watches. No right answer. For me, if I want to “learn” how to drive a 911, then I’d go 964. I also happen to think they have the best vintage/modern cosmetic compromise. For easier ownership experience, probably would lean towards 997.2 although I wouldn’t turn down a 997.1 either. I think the 997.1 is in a depreciation sweet spot right now. My thoughts on with this last statement have a lot to do with maintenance of a relatively young car.

Thanks,
Brian
