I love all Japanese sports cars from late 80s to late 90s. I had two 1st gen MR-2s. 87 NA and 89 Supercharged. Both were awesome. Had a MKIV Supra TT and a 300ZX TT simultaneously.
Both could have been a bit lighter (both around 3500 lbs). Both were fast and both were superb. 2JZ GTE is as reliable as an anvil ... even if pumped up to well over 1000 hp. The Z-32 was capable enough but please don't break (hard to work on). But it was a joy to drive and was much more comfortable even for very tall people. My road bike fit in the back with front wheel laying on top of the bike! FD's are amazing. Gorgeous and they handle so SO well! Light!! Drove one and loved it... and they ARE reliable if you drive them right and maintain them correctly. Also had a WRX and an STi (hatchbacks). Grip monsters but RWD is more fun. Now back to small, light and nimble with my 2nd ND Miata. Not as fast but not slow, especially on a track or twisty road and might be more fun than the others but those MR-2s came close!

Although it would be a much better car in many ways. I do like it with a lot of modifications but it is quite a heavy car, I've driven one my cousin owned back then, extremely fast indeed but hard to keep on the road I guess, never really trusted that car...

Well, I don't know much about the reliability of the A110 but over the last 37 years MX-5s have been very reliable. The ND has been around for 10 years. It's very reliable
engine has evolved (hp added and red line raised considerably in '19) but has been around even longer. Only issue with the ND was some transmission problems in the first few years that was addressed about 5 years ago.
The rotary only had 3 moving parts. Not much in there to break, but if you don't stay on top of the cooling system and oil changes they can fail totally or wear out
the apex seals. One mistake some people made was to not rev them. They suck gas so many people thought it would use less if they drove it like grandma. Bad idea. Maintained properly and driven correctly they are very reliable. Pull up some YouTube or Wiki...
In terms of safety the A110 will ..
.. be a lot safer than a 90ies RX-7. If I have to crash one of them it will have to be the A110
Not sure an FD would be that unsafe. Earlier RX-7s (especially gen 1) would be less safe... but people still drive old VW buses! And Beetles! Or original Fiat 500s and
Multiplas! Frankly I don't feel very safe in my friends 67 911 or his 914!
I had a big crash back in 2018.
2015 F20 BMW 120d, hit a tree full-on at +/- 60/80 kph (net). Moments before impact I was 100% sure this was the end, I couldn't believe my eyes after the crash I still had my legs and limbs attached to my body. I even jumped out of the car ... adrenaline...
