Much easier to calculate $ per engine hour since there’s no odometer

But I’d also say that fuel consumption of a boat varies much more with speed than it does in a car due to the drag of the hull, winds, currents, etc. I was talking to the owner of a “cigarette boat” who said he could cruise at 60 knots. I replied, “Wow, you could get to Catalina in 90 minutes!” And he replied “I could, IF I could carry enough fuel to get there…"

I think he said maybe takes a couple gallons per mile - I researched the Mercury 400R motor (guys around here have 4-6 of these) and factory specs say up to 38 gallons of fuel per hour...

Let's say 6 x 38=228 gallons per hour, about 2 hours to get to Catalina and 2 more back, with maneuvering and currents, 900 gallons at $6 per gallon=$5400 in fuel is too much to contemplate!

In terms of fuel capacity, cigarette boats tend to have large tanks to accommodate the needs of their high-performance engines.
Fuel capacities can range from 200 to 600 gallons, depending on the boat's size and purpose.
However, it should be noted that these vessels typically have high fuel consumption rates to maintain their impressive speeds.
