Yes, the were/are very popular in France!
A lot of families have/had them: quite comfortable and roomy for the whole family. The upright sitting position and the good visibility were also sold as advantages at the time. The car legacy was carried on with the C3 Picasso and C4 Picasso (every time, it is the jacked up version of the original car: Xsara, C3 and C4).
The most memorable aspect for me was the advertising campaign, which was quite fun:
Importing would be cheap, as they now cost near to nothing
