"slightly too small for my ideal size" works better for me than "slightly too large for my wrist"
I only have one watch that felt borderline too large when I bought it (Speedmaster 57, 41.5 mm, but long lugs and very thick) - it never sat right on my small wrist. And it did not get better over time.
On the other hand, I have some watches that felt "too small", and I got used to them and enjoy the more compact size. Including 33mm vintage pieces.
