It was a total miscalculation on the part of the watch brands.

During the pandemic, the demand for watches increased beyond comprehension as people had disposable income which they could not spend and had time in their hands to spend it on the internet via auctions. Watches began attracting speculators and watch brands decided to increase their prices to weed out the speculators and to ensure that they were the ones making the money rather than the speculators. However since the end of the pandemic and over the last 15 months, the secondary market has witnessed a steep decline and suddenly watches that have seen a massive price increase during the pandemic and soon after are now not as sought after. Yes the watch brands have eradicated a lot of speculators but with the new higher prices, many who are genuinely interested in watches find it difficult to not only afford a watch from certain brands but worse still, would not receive an allocation to buy one.
