Chopard Technologies S.A. develops a trail-blazing high-frequency escapement
Chopard
Technologies S.A. in Fleurier, the development unit within the Chopard
group, is currently finalising the conception of an innovative
high-frequency escapement capable of reaching a cadence of 8 to 10
Hertz. Two patents have already been filed to protect this
technological feat based on a conception that is entirely new to the
watch industry.
According
to various theories on movement rates, the higher the frequency of
balance oscillations, the more accurately a watch will run. A
traditional mechanical watch has a frequency of 4 Hertz or four
oscillations per second, which represents four to-and-fro swings of the
balance in one second or 28,800 vibrations per hour. The feat
accomplished by Chopard’s R&D division consists in increasing this
frequency to a cadence at least twice that standard level.
The
escapement developed by Chopard Technologies reaches frequencies of
between 8 to 10 Hertz (respectively 57,600 and 72,000 vibrations per
hour), meaning that the time between the “tick” and the “tock” is a
mere five-hundredths of a second.
Wearers of such a watch will be able to admire the smooth jerk-free motion of the seconds hand.
This
escapement has been created using innovative processes providing
solutions and designs that could not be achieved by traditional
mechanical engineering.
Two
patents applications have been filed and numerous laboratory tests are
in progress in order to further fine-tune this exceptional innovation.
