5237 accuracy report

Contrary to Rolex's forums, one does not see may threads on Breguet accuracy... Thought a few observations may be interesting.

The 5237 being my first "Manual", it took some time to get used to after so many "Auto".

Like for cars, the Automatic watch is a Start-and-Forget affair. As long as you wear it, the mainspring is under relatively constant tension, thus helping to maintain a steady rate. Different positions overnight may help slowing or speeding up things for a fraction of or few seconds, but usually if it's not keeping time to your liking, you just have to have it adjusted.

Again like for cars, I found that a Manual watch is much more dependent on what you consciously do with it. Forget to wind it, and the poor ticker will soon slow down, then stop. Back to square one, where's the friggin' GPS? (In the middle of Africa, a GPS is still the most reliable source of accurate time around. Atomic clocks are scarce).

Now, the figures...

When wound regularly at the same hour, and left overnight crown up, my 5237 gains 2-2.5s/day. Quite honorable score by any mechanical movement standards.

Left overnight dial down, this becomes 4-5s/day.

Winding it in the morning, as I count the tiny ratchetings, if I pass the 23-24 mark, then 25, 26, 27... the sinking feeling becomes a certainty: Gosh! Forgot to wind it yesterday... Again!

I know that I just lost 15-16s at once. Stock market crashes, everybody run flapping their arms.

And with that, I can now drive my watch on the verge of infinitesimal accuracy over time: I just need to wind it every morning (and not forget to do it) (did I say not forget?), then once a week or so I can allow myself to be forgetful and leave it alone for a couple of days.

Don't need to pull the crown of my watch anymore, unless I change time zone...
