TimeOut

A quick trip in Croatia.

When you are based in Trieste ( Italy ), you have the possibility to go to Slovenia and Croatia very easily.

The border with Slovenia is at 10 Kilometers, and it will take you 15 more kilometers to be in Croatia.

You know my love for Istria, which has a tormented story. It was for some years, part of Italy, and now part of Croatia.

Damjan will explain that to us better than I can, as it is a very complex story.

This year, we decided to head a bit farhter, in the South part of Istria.

We had a 125 Kilometers trip, which sounds ridiculous, but it will take you 2 hours and a half to do it, firstly because there is a lot of traffic to pass the slovenian / croatian border, then because the highway is not that fast, and quite crowdy, and also because you cannot speed on the small roads which will lead you to your final destination.

We passed Fiume ( italian name of Rijeka ) which mixes beauty...

... To the ugly: I don't get why they built such a monstruous building, in such a magnificient decorum:

Do some 20 to 30 more kilometers, and you will arrive to- The Scrabble Champions will appreciate- KRK, which offers a superb view, and some great sceneries.

On the background, Rijeka:

I love the contrast between the white grey stones and the deep blue of the sea a lot!

We were looking for a place to have a bath in the sea. We found that, always in KRK.

The environment is fascinating:

What do you think of this Hotel? I would love to see it restaured, and to spend some nights, here!

After some hours spent there, we decided to not come back directly to Trieste, but to make a quick jump to an adorable istrian village, Dignano ( Damjan will forgive me, but I can NEVER recall the croatian name of this village ).

Because my father in law has a deep passion for these small houses built in stones, without ANY cement between them.

In italian, they call these small houses " casites ", while it seems that Croatians call them Kazun.

I totally love this picture, taken by my father in law, inside the Casita.

And, in our way back, we went by the Lim Kanal, which is another " heavenesque " place:

You can always have a drink there, but due to the proximity of these garlic garlands, I passed on it. wink

As it started to be late, we decided to have a quick bite on the road, where they roast pork, and Damjan finally decided to join us in his typical and inimitable way...

Croatia offers some many nice places to visit. Time for an european gathering, there?

Best.
