Fountain Pen Question - For school
As the above title says, just looking for recomendations for a good fountain pen that can be used for school (University). I’ve recently been hit by the fountain pen bug, I own a Waterman in a stainless steel and gold finish and a Montblanc Le Petit Prince Classique. Both of those pens are amazing and are great performers. The Montblanc had a little bit of trouble at first, but after a good cleaning in distilled water and adjusting my pen positioning I found it was me that was contributing to those troubles *knock on wood. The Waterman writes much better after those positing adjustments too.
I ran into a dilema after coming back from reading week, writing with a regular pen just isnt the same anymore and id love to go the whole day with a fountain pen. Has to be affordable, and not overly flashy. I’ve narrowed down some options:
1. Conklin duragraph (put it on hold at my local pen shop) it looks good and the flex nib is something new, QC issues are concerns but every pen under the sun seems to have had something in QC, the company is good on fixing what QC has been reported.
2. TWSBI 580 series - can store a LOT of ink and from the regular, AL or ALR versions of the 580 plenty to choose from. Again QC issues have been reported and company fixes or replaces things and cracks in the clear resin are a worry but having that full tank of ink for a day, two days or a week is too enticing.
3. Pelikan M200/205 - ive heard the stories, my dad sings its praises but is it too flashy for a school pen?
4. Pilot Metropolitan - cheap price, performance is good, QC and leaky nib reported.
Out of the options the pelikan is the most expensive, then TW and conklin come out near the same price point, Pilot comes out the cheapest.
Any other pens out there that you ladies and gents might recomend?

I tried the Lamy in store and just couldn't get over the looks, stainless style was too flashy (and 40 bucks more expensive in the local shop :O why do they do this to us ) and the black I didn't really like as a color.
it felt good in the hand and my brain has been going back and forth about it.
I use a Sheaffer 300 Ferrari fountain pen, decent pen for $80.
I don't post it, seems a bit top heavy when posted.
In the real world of working pens, there are 3 crucual criteria. 1 Easy to fill, 2 doesn't leak & 3 holds enough.
In my experience, the world's full of pretty pens, but very few that actually do the job. One is my Dunhill AD2000. About US$150 second-hand.
These (and other) Dunhills were/are made in Japan by Pilot, but with more luxury than sttandard items.
So, the 2000, for example, has a complex, silver barrel band, individually numbered. The filling system is excellent, the clip adjustable for shirt or jacket and the whole thing a quality product.
I would go Pelikan but bigger than 200/250
Find it tad to small for my hand...400 is good ..and then you have many choices of colors...more or less flashy. Cheers D
Ahh my friend :D I am put into a prediciment with Pelikan, will have to go online for one, thank you so much for the advice I think I'll have to track down a 400 if I decide with this brand.
That was a huge concern if the 200 was small, my Montblanc is the 145 version and I use it uncapped but it fits and feels amazing. The Pelikan Pura also came up in my searches but the more traditional looks of the Pelikans regular series clinched it.
The conklin I reserved is almost a twin to this Parker you've posted above, I love Parker and I'm tempted but I've never had a good time with long periods of writing with it, for
some reason my hand always rejects it or I poke myself with the clip lol

Exactly why it is such a prediciment, the perfection is a huge factor, but am glad to see that you've had the experience their reputation is known for.
Just a problem with the sizing if 200 will be too small or uncomfortable for long periods.

I like the Pelicans and the Lamy 2000, no question. But as a daily writer nothing beats the Japanese stuff. Try a Platinum 3776 Century (M or B nib). Even after 6 weeks unused it will write at once because of a perfect sealing. And it‘s not blinky 😉 Anoth...
I agree with Japanese pens for daily writers
They were mine in grad school. Usually, they come with cartridge converters which might not get you through the whole day if you’re writing a lot. The Pilot 823 has a piston, though, and is universally beloved.

...I own a few in my collection, and all have problems with the ink flow. After a few days the fountain pens fall dry. For a daily writer a handicap.

I own four Montegrappas. The issue you describe I have only had with a top range limited series, which I do not feel comfortable carrying around for daily use. In spite of this it is still my preferred writing choice and I blamed this issue on not enough ...
