Hands on review new IWC Ingenieur

Was it the worst kept secret 🤫? I think everyone expected a new version of the Genta Classic this year, some would argue it’s a few years late!
The theme at IWC was all about engineering prowess and the proudly displayed the Mercedes Diesel that did 200 miles on one tank highlighting technology

The new watch certainly carries DNA from the previous generations
And the family resemblance is all too obvious. But does it succeed in being heir to the throne?

The first impression are very positive, its extremely comfortable and the bracelet is exquisite. The bracelet gains its aesthetics from the second generation, whilst the dial and bezel are clearly from the original SL and are quintessential to the overall design.

Comfort wise it’s excellent. The bracelet has s double deployment but if you want a clasp with an extension adjustment for summer you can purchase it as an optional part.
It still has the soft iron cover and that contributes to the height being 10.8mm, which is still quite acceptable.
Of the four options I found the aquamarine dial to be the most standout - not what I was expecting

Its an usual colour- the original intention was for a more blue colour, I am glad that they were a bit more daring.
The process for producing the colour is complex and requires several operations

The other version which caught my attention was the titanium version with grey dial

I couldn’t get over how light this was. The combination with the black indices and hands was really cool.
One area of controversy is perhaps the crown guard

I would have preferred it without but, its not as bad as you might think and isn’t a dealbreaker.
The price is another point and I can see that, but this piece is extremely well finished in terms of the case and bracelet

Whilst each part is machine produced all the polishing is done by hand. Also the bracelet is designed to he adjustable without needing tools.
Overall it meets its brief, is extremely comfortable, displays its DNA in abundance. A solid release that will make a fantastic addition to any collection.
My only concern is that in the UK the waiting list is already 1 year.
Best
