This post is inspired by Ed Tonkin’s recent acquisition of an Antiqua.
Steampunk is a design movement that has been described as ‘retro-futurism’. It fuses modern items with a Victorian steam power aesthetic then adds a sprinkling of Japanese anime and science fiction to come up with eye catching creations.
In horology the works of Vianney Halter seem particularly to channel these sensibilities, but there are other designers and manufacturers that are producing similarly inspired creations.
How do you respond emotionally to these designs? Because they contain Victorian and art-deco elements, do you think they will remain ‘timeless’ or will they quickly lose their design relevance? What other watches do you think fit into the steampunk category?
Looking forward to your thoughts and emotional responses!
Andrew
