That’s a very helpful essay shedding more light on the topic for me, Daos, and one that Rob should also enjoy.
I can see the blending of gothic, industrial and Victorian aspects and your cross referenced music and couture is apropos. I love the nightmarish paintings (and sculptures) of Bacon, Hieronymus Bosch and HR Giger (whose biomechanoid creations also link man with machine, reminiscent of some steampunk designs) that seem to tap into a very deep emotional artery. Sounds like a future topic for TimeOut ...
I think the idea of classical horology is also “… to inject romantic sensibility into our cold, high-tech world” and I do relate to steampunk watches. However they need to be wearable pieces of art and there are only a handful that are successful to my eyes. These are Vainney’s Trio and Antiqua. The man’s a genius!
Do you mind if I quote you in the future on “vampires and steampunk go together like peanut butter and jelly”?
Thanks again,
Andrew
