VW Scirocco, do you remember?
VW released some nice coupés, the most charismatic being the Karmann Ghia, certainly.
In the mid Seventies, VW came back to the Coupé Style with the Scirocco, with different engines: 1.5, 1.6, 1.8...
The 1.5 came with the rectangular front lights and was quite anemic.
The 1.6 85 HP was a very good one, with its carburators, and the 1.8 had the injection and was called GTI, three magic letters, at that time.
When I was 19, my mother gave my her Scirocco, which had 120 000 Kilometers. A 1.6, 85 HP, then , but which was very funny to drive.
And quite robust, as I had to let it go some 5 years after with 290 000 Kilometers, not because of the engine, which still ran strong, but because of the rust which attacked all the parts of the bloody, at that point that I could see the road through the floor!
So, the VW Scirocco was my own first car, a car which I loved a lot.
I found on the net some pictures of it.
The first generation, from circa 1975 ( I am not sure it was not born in 1974... )
The GTI version:
And the restyling, which came in 1978, with the straight side lights which had been changed for curved ones.
The only thing I pested against was the gearbox, 4 gears only, but the engine was quite supple, with two phases... Up to 3000 Revs, it was ok, supple, but after 3000 revs, it started to be very nervous and got this exciting second breathe. Impressive.
Sweet memories!
Do you remember it? Did some of you drive it?
Best,
Nicolas
