I heard it described this way

 

Same color date wheel is like wearing a blue suit with a blue shirt and blue tie and blue belt and blue shoes.

It all “matches”.

But for me, a guy dressed like that would look kinda tacky.

So blue suit, white shirt, grey tie, black belt and matching shoes.

Classy.

Same applies for date wheels for me. Too matchy matchy looks tacky.

Or no date.

For me the issue with date is:

Pain to set. Back then, ppl had one watch and it www worn daily. We have multiple and need to set it.

Not being centralised. Date window at 3 o’clock is not balanced.

12 o’clock or 6 o’clock is better.
