"everyone else is doing it" (note Girard Perregaux in particular).   There is something to be said for an instantly recognizable manufacturor as determined by viewing the piece (notably the RO by Audemars Piguet, the Nautilus by Patek Philippe, Rolex, etc.) with subsequent iterations readily identifiable as offspring of the manufacture.  The brand would seem more desirable with easy recognition of its products. 

At the same time, the companies must be finanially successful and this dramatic explosion of new variants must be working for them.  It is difficult to know which business model is the most successful.  Time will tell.
