Horological Meandering

Dear wise and distinguished gentlemen,

I can't remember being influenced in my youth about watches, but I began to find them interesting about 15-20 years ago when I realized I had too many bicycles and automobiles - my garages were full - but I hadn't lost the lust for new trinkets. Watches seemed like miniature mechanical miracles to me (with oh-so-cool tools!)

and I slowly became addicted -- and here I am with more than I need, people bringing me interesting watches to clean, adjust or fix.

As I read the thoughts of others in this thread, the sentence that sticks in my mind is what Nicolas said:

It is just a matter of sensitivity for nice things

Let me say it again, the sentence that sticks in my mind is what Nicolas said:

It is just a matter of sensitivity for nice things

Some of us have it, and most don't. Nor do they care. They spend their money on drink, or skydiving, or cruise ships!
(thank goodness there are watch boutiques on cruise ships)

For most younger people watches are irrelevant.

Perhaps in 20-30 years watches will be like pay telephones, buggy whips, juke boxes or dueling pistols. Or typewriters.

What was the question again? I'm so wise and distinguished that I've forgotten ....

Oh yes - who will teach them about beautiful, valuable things EVEN WHEN THOSE THINGS AREN'T VISIBLE TO EVERYONE AROUND THEM?

We will.
