Horological Meandering

Great article.

First, concerning the how I discovered or when was I attracted by watches: I had a very small and simple quartz to begin with in the early 1980's.

I had just after that a no brand Goofy dial watch (1st mechanical) and another small diver-like one some years later (before I went 12).

I remember my dad had a Quartz Cartier and the Omega Speedmaster Mark IV I wear know.

In spite of this, I was never really attracted by watches and I don't think these elements made me like watches today. In fact I only went into watches around 2008-2009.

And the reason maybe my appeal for all what is mechanical (cars, planes, radio controled as a teenager etc...). I like also sciences and how physics apply to everyday events.

Hence my love for cars as a teenager and more when I got my licence.

In 2008, I went in watch shops to help a friend choosing one for his wedding: that's how it started. The seed is this event, the earth in which the seed will grow is my background which had nothing to do with watches.

As a conclusion I came very lately into watches and didn't have this environment during my childhood to make me like watches in particular.

So everything is possible for future generations and you don't know when the passion can trigger. it is more a precise event than a background (for me).

Of course, the other background solution can work very well too. But it is not mandatory, imho.

How will it evolve today with smartphones? I don't have the slightest idea.

I think that the car industry is compeltely different because of pollution issues or different locomotion habits (electric, motorcycle is easier in cities, carsharing etc...) etc...

The price tag is of course an important criterion: getting a 20K+ watch is not concerning a huge crowd of buyers and they don't buy for the same reason as when you buy an everyday and fun Swatch for instance.

The question I would like to find an answer too is: will there be buyers for our mechanical watches in the future? Or will the market plummet?

Not that I buy to sell for profit making but after I buy I may want to sell to make a different purchase.

Interesting topic.

Cheers, Mark
