I completely agree with you that going to watch shops looking for watches has a pronounced effect - if the people selling them for a living could not do it... 
Was also one of the important features for me, when I went looking for a watch for my father during university days with a Swiss friend. The stuff he knew and asked (from my layman's perspective)!
I also agree that someone buying a Swatch is different from someone buying a very expensive watch. Are many of the latter a subset of the former, though? I.e. did they go through several steps on the Sloan ladder first?
Am also curious about your last question - will there be a market for expensive watches in 25, 30 years?
