Horological Meandering

I've noticed the same.

When I started participating on watch forums in the late 1990's the talk was different.  Back then it was mostly the true fans who spoke more of the technical side of our hobby.  Now it's a race to get popular models at all cost just to say you have it.  Some people don't wear the watches and others buy just for resale profit due to scarcity.  Where's the fun in that?  Money doesn't buy happiness but it gets you 5 minutes of internet fame and that's unfortunately what some are after.  It's hollow and pointless but those who really care can always stick together and hope some of these serial flippers find a new hobby...like stocks and other actual investments.

Trips to a watch shop get me happy and excited for the things I'm seeing because I understand what marvels they are.  I feel like a kid going into a toy store while thinking to myself how all of these parts came together create something you can take on your life's journey.  It can be anything from a lower priced Seiko diver to a Rolex OP 36 which I wear nearly every day and beyond to pieces I can only dream of seeing, nevermind owning.  To appreciate them for what they are and not what it could be sold for is important to me.

At least there are still some passionate fans out there.  smile
