I agree
with most you are saying. That's also and precisely why I was wondering (and started this thread): is a Rolex mandatory? Somehow I keep being drawn to them. Even though I do not want to own more than 1. Even though I have got nicer (read: more elegant/delicate) watches. There is just something about them.
What i meant with The Swatch of Mechanical Watches is that if you compare Rolex with Swatch there are so many similarities:
1. Brand name known world wide
2. High volumes
3. Timeless design
4. Brought horology to the masses
5. Both probably the first watch someone owned (Swatch as child and Rolex as adult)
I do not agree that Quartz watches were out to kill mechanical watches. It was/is just a new form of horology (the art or science of making timepieces or of measuring time). And for a (luckily not to long) period of time the mechanical watch industry did not have an answer.
cheers
