Imho, horology is doing the very best it ever has! We have the widest variety of 'brands', plus talented watch makers, and DIY'ers, offering the most qty of different timepieces in the history of watches..
From cheap knock-offs and new Asian creations to British, Danish, French, Singapore, of course Germany.... Frankly, a Longines for $2000 is a lot of timepiece, or DIY it for a few hundred.
For those who truly value talented watch makers creating artistic works of horological mastery, we have more choices there as well (but get ready for 5+ year waiting lists... if ever).
But the point is we have them, many-ish, crafting, which imho could NEVER have happened back in the 1990s (due to financial / marketing / fashion / whatever).
We do live in interesting times, hopefully on this we can all agree.

So... 2026... $60k for mass-produced watches, $100k for a basic handcrafted horology, and $400k for something.......

Really? Maybe the 1920a and 1930s cars, the VERY old guys want those. The affluent crypto/tech/finance bro kids want their 1980s cars so those are going for big $$$ now. The market is crazy for Pokémon cards, too.
Guess the 1970s Trilogy Old Guys are now completely out-of-date with modern times. Even Rolex knows "A new century begins." We live in AWESOMELY interesting times. Where new watch makers of every type are welcome, and the old brands must adapt or die.

Yup, and i have to admit Rolex's "A New Century Begins" is very appropriate. We all know it's here, even us old farts like me.

LOL, yes, true, tho using a cell phone isn't flexing or considered eccentric / eclectic. Pocketwatch guys can wear out-of-style vintage luxury clothes, rings on all fingers, etc,

I just scrolled some new releases from W&W and among many well established brands the price tags are just crazy at a quality level that is unjustifiable. Many new small independants seem
to offer better value and quality than the big names now. Some new JLC’s perpetuals look like Frederic Constants, that imho look better, at three to four times the price.
Very frustrating...

:) Perhaps, yet you do get far more watchmaker hours, and they have great talent too (not still in training or just out of school). Big Box Store Brands probably charge 2x to 4x the price per watchmaker hour due to corporate overhead.

Sorry, I don't understand: it is all simply due to general inflation, nothing to blame the watch industry for.
The next inflation shock is also comming soon, which is purely caused by "politics" this time and not corona.
True! Though I prefer the term "Currency Devalution " instead of Inflation. Plus the Swiss DE-value their currency, too, so their currency is just as worth less.
Perhaps prices should be in Gold, like early watch making In 10 years, $1,000,000 Swiss Franc could be the average for a RR, FPJ, etc. We know machines are obviously winning over the human touch, but pricing doesn't reflect that imho.
