Advanced Research for example, is a "serial" watch with added something in the movement. The fact that they took annual calendar and added a new silicon spring, doesn't make it a new family.

Omega was in the middle, closer to Breguet - they have pretty good, pretty complete and (pretty) consistent data on their website and it seems to reduce to 14 model families, across some 4000 references!:

Look at AP which turned to be "The Royal Oak Company" Or Patek, which was on it's way to be the NutiNaut company, Rolex, Omega, Tag , IWC etc, have their families, they are not a "single" line company...

I've found 36 distinct families for Pateck so far.... and that's not including the new one :-)
