Look at it from another angle...
Finally....
the car industry is starting to learn from the watch industry.
How do you reduce the costs, make more reliable, give greater autonomy to a watch?
Make it electric, less parts, smaller, simpler production.
Look at the difference in production costs between a simple quartz watch and a simple mechanical watch.
More than an order of magnitude I'd say.
When the automobile industry finally gets the gasoline out of its veins we will see cars that are more reliable,
less expensive to produce and more fun to drive.
There is only one thing other than history holding us back, the energy storage.
I expect that problem will be solved too in the next 25 years and our grandchildren will be looking back and
wondering why the oldies insisted on those exhaust spueing, loud and smelly gasoline cars for so long.
Of course there will still be the nostalgics, like we are.

Personally I like their existance, but have no interest in owning one myself. As for other Purists, I'd bet that the majority do not favour such watches, but I'd also bet that most wouldn't turn their nose up at a Seiko Spring Drive.
