Horological Meandering

Hi Everyone, I know it might be counter intuitive for watch collectors to be asked to pick just one, but I hope you can help me out. I am trying to simplify my life. I just want to own a few things that I will enjoy (i.e. really use and not just look at).... 

Which one? ;)

Honestly, I don't like the idea of the single watch for any occasion. ;) But in your selection, I would choose the Rolex without any doubt: it is the most "all-around" of the selection IMHO. Fx

The Rolex is quite solid. Anyway, I totally understand what you mean about different watches for different purposes. I guess that's part of what makes collecting fun.

...even though the Rolex would be the obvious choice, just because the VC is less common out in the real world. But I guess you could say that about your other choices, too. Emil

All occasions? You fool! It does not exist. Why limit one self to one single watch when there are so many wonderful watches out there? I know you cannot have them all, but you could at least get one that you really like? Repectfully, best- Z'

...and that's those that do wear watches ,the Rolex among those choices seems the clearer choice for me, but not for the brand perception, but for the adaptive styling that works with jeans, shorts or suit. It's why they sell so doggone many of these ever... 

I totally understand the idea of only one watch. But what a terribly difficult decision. Given your existing five choices I would definitely go with the Rolex GMT. However, I can't imagine how painful it was to get down to the last five. -- Sancerre

...the VC OS, as I feel as if it is a watch that can be worn over a long period of time without wondering at some point "what did I find attractive about that piece in the first place?" The limitation as a GMT watch is the single hand on the second time z... 

Or wear a suit. My choice is for a tool watch that would live up to my lifestyle. And so my choice is Sub, but not a new model but vintage. Such as my lovely 5512 :) And all I would do to change its appearance is fit it with another strap :) Regards Tony ...  

There are more than one watch, at GP, which could be an " only one watch ". Depending on your lifestyle... Best, Nicolas

I know that if I ever had the finances and opportunity to do so, the PP Nautilus 3711 would be the one. For you, more difficult. With the GMT function out of your choices I would rank 1) VC Overseas Dualtime and then 2) Rolex GMT Master II. Nothing agains...

Your email summarizes the roller coaster journey I've been on. Yes, the VC and the Rolex are ahead of the others for me. Some days the VC is clearly ahead. Other days, it's the Rolex. The GO was an alternative I put on the list because I was intrigued but...

I am actually a psychiatrist (still in training), but there's little reason to quibble. I have never owned either a Rolex or a VC Overseas, so I doubt I can tell you anything about them that you don't already know. From the post showing the VC on a mounta... 

What's not to like about these? Well, my guess is that some folks (including my wife, by the way) find the YG version of the OS DT a bit too, shall we say, blingy -- and maybe the Deep Stream SS/Ti color combo is not exactly to your taste -- but these are...  

I have considered this ‘single watch’ question a lot, and it is Rolex that comes closest for me. I don’t have a GMT, but this 5513 is extremely comfortable, rugged and versatile and you would find the same with a GMT, I am certain. I agree with the recomm...  

I will seriously struggle to do that but if I had to, I'd go with a GMT but with black dial as I think that will be better for slightly more formal occasions. Good luck with this near nirvana quest :-)

Both a great. I like the Rolex because it is the classic GMT watch. I like the VC because of the technical looking dial and the awesome bracelet. If I could only pick one it would be the Overseas. Just curious as why the Ulysse Nardin Dual Time did not ma... 

I knew it was a solid watch, but for some reason it just did't get me excited. I had the same reaction to the JLC Reverso Grande GMT. It was another solid watch, but it didn't feel like it was for me. Same with the GP. I guess that's how it is often times...
