...also known as the Wayne Rainey corner. It has been substantially improved over the past years to suit MotoGP -- when I first started driving and racing at Laguna, the apex was under a fly-over pedestrian bridge and had a high berm-like curb on the inside -- not to mention that the downhill approach out of the Corkscrew was off-camber on the right-hand half of the track! Not for the faint of heart -- and I had a big off there once in a Russell single-seater which thankfully did not land me in the wall.
These days, you just set up on the right side of the track, delay your turn in long enough to ensure a late apex, and let 'er rip! You can see in the photo that I'm drifting the car a bit, which is good fun (especially given that even in "Race" mode the 599 GTB Fiorano has enough traction control to keep you out of too much trouble, unlike my old 512 TR, which didn't even have ABS brakes or power steering, let alone driver aids!).
I hope that you get your chance at Laguna -- I had the honor a couple of years ago to take Laurent Ferrier out as a passenger at Laguna. In his early life, Laurent was a top-flight endurance racer (2nd overall at Le Mans one year!), but had never been on-track at Laguna and so was very excited to see it from the car.
Thanks for your note!
Best,
Gary
