Independents

#1 Rexhep Rexhepi in platinum

Love the art deco dial style, reminds me of great vintage dress watches from Vacheron & Patek. Love grand feu email. Love how clean the movement looks without much text. It’s all about the movement - architecture & finishing. I know it is only a prototype that we saw at BaselWorld and Rexhepi still has some work to do on it from what SJX’s blog indicated. But hopefully no additional text added in production. And if you buy it, you get in early and you’re walking on a newer path. I think the one threat to all the independents is over-exposure. Yes, you want the independent brand to be healthy & successful for the future, but it loses some luster when you see the same watch owned by 100 other people.

#2 Gronefeld. Versatile. It looks like it can dress down as well as dress up. The silver metallic dial is too sober for my own tastes although it does give it a sporty chic look, I am definitely in the camp of the salmon dial variation. I like the crown. The movement is fairly unique and pretty to view but a bit too much text for my taste that distracts from the finishing. If they would allow you to remove some text, then I think it is even better and would possibly be my #1 (if salmon dial).

Good luck. I think your budget is very healthy and you could have many other watchmakers to choose from but of course the style varies.
