Independents

As the OP, I must say that I agree with the sentiment expressed here...

...that there is no Holy Trinity of independent watchmakers, and if there ever were a Holy Trinity in this category, it would probably consist of something other than true independent watchmakers.

The genre of independent watchmakers is sustained by the idiosyncratic talents of the watchmakers and the appropriately idiosyncratic tastes of watch collectors. In contrast, the tastes of the mass market will converge on a few heavily marketed brands, and the reasons those brands occupy the apex positions are easy to identify. But for independent watchmakers, almost by definition, consensus will always be fragmented.

But for this reason, it is even more interesting to hear how a particular collector picks his or her favorites. My own journey into this sector has only just started, but I've settled on 2 that I really like. I started with FP Journe (probably the most heavily marketed of the Independent Watchmakers). After wading through a sea of Rolexe and Patek displays, the expressiveness of his designs opened up a whole world of appreciation for horology in me, the way they convey such vitality while showcasing technical mastery. Since then, I have acquired a taste for Laurent Ferrier's work - unmistakable dynamism draped in the timeless elegance of simplicity. Those are my top two favorite watchmakers for now.
