Independents

I too would not tolerate such appalling service

but I have had very good experiences personally with a few of the big brands and I think it bores down mainly to the authorised dealer(AD). If you have a good AD, the brand will appear good. I have had experiences of good and bad ADs with the same brand so I do not fault the brand as much as I do the ADs. And I will go even further to state that the service offered by ADs differ from country to country partly due to the acceptable culture I have been fortunate to come across an AD in the small town of Windsor in the United Kingdom who I have been loyal to for over a decade now.  This AD would go out of its way to ensure that I own almost any watch I desire by allowing me to put down a minimal deposit and pay the rest as and when I am able to.  This to me is extraordinary service and I have a perpetual calendar in their safe which I hope to pay off by 2028!  Similarly, I know an AD who I have bought six new Lange watches from and who has never invited me to a single Lange function let alone a factory visit. I will not blame Lange on their customer service but I would the AD.

I know of many pleasant independents but to get the watch to them and to have it serviced had taken 10 months as they had no way to get the watch back to me due to their small network of ADs. This to me is unacceptable as the watch was still under warranty so again I will say that it depends which independent one is referring to. In addition, unless you send a watch back to the same AD you purchased it from, many ADs of independents will charge you a handling fee for the watch even during the warranty period. For a large brand, this is covered irrespective of which AD you go to.  That is what an international guarantee should cover.
