Now more wary of A Collected Man
There is no doubt that it offers some of the best writing on fine watches available. For sheer educational content it's as good as it gets, and it's free too.
At the same time it is also a sales platform, which is why its writing is free to read. As such, its influence shapes tastes and directs behaviour towards a fairly narrow range of watches.
This is a critique rather than a criticism: it is, after all, the thinking person's Hodinkee and in this market that is a secular good. Nevertheless I now read its work and view its image posts with the same circumspection with which I approach most other platforms.

but still in the current market, a watch like that should be auctioned as buyers are behaving irrationally and paying over the top for even insignificant pieces.
I cannot imagine there was no pre-agreed,deal with a serious buyer before putting this up for sale.
It was sold almost immediately and it seems to have gone for at or near the asking price. Not sure how I feel about this watch selling for so much money.

I think it makes sense when you look at this in the context of art. Fine watchmaking is art, and I would personally rather own this than a painting!
Casemaker?
Sorry to hijack the thread with a possible stupid question, but does anybody know who made the case? Did Dufour make it himself and what about the later Simplicities?
Yes. That is true.
The dials for the Simplicity is made by Metalem. There should be some hallmarks by the casemaker. Perhaps just a question of digging a bit deeper.
I believe cases were made by Chatelain (now owned by
Chanel) and dials made by Donzé Cadrans
