Independents

While I love the look of this, classic elements throughout…

I too struggle with the concept. Are we not celebrating artisanal independent watchmakers or brands. We can do both, however, there is a clear distinction to me and one that seems to be glossed over all too often in today’s IG driven world.
The days of discussing horological minutiae have all but disappeared instead to be replaced by fabulous photos of clearly wonderfully exciting watches.
In all fairness it has helped the artisans I have championed for over 20years now, reach collectors and consumers who would never have known of their work in the “old days”. A good thing for them.

Where am I going with this? Back to the distinction and differences between a sole watchmaker, whose life has been to learn and fine tune his or her skills, hopefully work in restoration for at least 5 yrs, then create their own watch; and the alternative, such as this, which is a collaborative effort by a team of clearly skilled professionals. The products can look and feel similar in many cases, however I’d argue the real value is quite different. The watch business is the later, the former, a creative artisanal independent watchmaker, significantly rarer and much more compelling in my opinion.
Compelling, because it is extremely rare to find both the aesthetic and engineering faculty in one person. I’d like to see this aspect addressed more in the watch world, as I believe it to be very important when evaluating what one is looking at and why it exists.

Either way, I do very much enjoy the look of this new brand’s first effort. It certainly has the style I happen to love.

HAGWE All,
Cheers,
Tim
