For the Portuguese Yacht Club, IWC wished to honor the original Portuguese watch.
The two Portuguese businessmen who ordered the "unusually large, accurate wristwatch" in the 1930s were named Rodriguez and Teixeira.
Alex Rodriguez and Mark Teixeira are the two star batters in the current New York Yankees lineup, hitting third and fourth.
In 2010, these two hitters combined for 68 doubles (two-base hits), including their playoff at-bats.
Thus, clearly, IWC used the "68" to evoke the performance of these two fine athletes, who happen to have the same name as the two men who commissioned the first Portuguese!
Obvious, isn't it?
Well, it's got to be either that, or someone at IWC wanted to honor the introduction of the original Yacht Club watch of 1967, but made a mistake when sending the order off to the shirt and hat printers.
