Hi,
It is pretty obvious that these two calibres present some similarities in their design. They also share some major characteristics: they are both automatic chronograph calibres with vertical clutch.
Still when I look at your two pics I don't think that they are based on the same base plate or have the exact same design.
I agree that it would be odd to see JLC selling calibres to FP and I don't imagine the contrary either in the recent years (as we are no longer in the 70s).
JLC and FP share something more: they are neighbours. They quite certainly have unvoluntarily exchanged watchmakers in the past. Sylvain Golay for instance worked for Blancpain/Frederic Piguet before working for JLC. I'm sure there are other examples in both ways.
So I can easily imagine that when JLC decided to create an in-house automatic chronograph calibre and at some point decided to go for a vertical clutch the FP design quite probably came on the table, or at least some ideas of it. Perhaps the vertical clutch came in because they knew that the FP calibre is well regarded! Watchmaking companies don't re-invent the wheel each time, you know that already.
This chronograph calibre is perhaps not the most exciting chronograph calibre produced by JLC. Yes it is perhaps intended to some extent to be the most affordable JLC work-horse chronograph and being so they didn't look for something extraordinary.
Looking at many chronograph calibres from the past, there were many more companies producing such calibres but the designs or layouts were quite often close.

movements would look the same" In fact not all movements have the same functional requirements, they don't all look the same!
I honestly don't think there is more to look for about this one!

Apart from opening the doors a little to the mind of the man leading the team at Jaeger-LeCoultre, the interview also revealed to me that like Ms Metrailler, Mr Lambert also ranks the IWC's 1993 Portugieser highly - which gives me hope for future designs ...
