Agree to all these points; Freak is a first concept watch, but still a "two dimensional" round wristwatch. Maybe one could then say that the likes of Opus, urwerk and MBF then broke paradigms and went from two dimensional to three dimensional "time sculptures"? Therefore innovative for me. I also agree that TAG Heuer is leading innovation with the new microtimer chromos etc. Respect! I also agree with the point made with regards to Quartz! I had dismissed quartz as a collector but also realised this insight maybe a year ago and try to add now iconic quartz movements and watches to my collevtion, have bought a Longines Ultra Quartz (first kibernetic watch, between quartz and tuning fork) and a Beta 21. Really groundbreaking!
I am also on this quest to understand how the mechanical watch industry reacted with innovation to the emergence of quartz; basically by trying to improve ptecision through form movements and higher beats up to 36,000. So I am fascinatd by the Longines Ultrachron or JLC high beat Cal906 chronometer... All failures and eventually surrendered to quartz.
See, thats the kind of thoughs I maybe tried to inadequately express as a reaction to the deep Sea chrono (asthetically a beautiful watch no doubt and I own a beautiful Vintage DS myself) and tried to say that I understand commercial pressures but sometimes think the watch industry should think more about the future than the past. But the right answer is probably that it needs to be a healthy mix to satisfy all clients!

Dear Nicolas, thank you for the great report! I must agree though with the minority voices in the forum that I think JLC has the 'neo-retro/retro-neo' hype too far. Although, from a business perspective they are probably doing the right thing as a company...

And I respect it as well, even if I don't see what is an innovative part in MBF watches ( I respect them a lot, by the way, and the Legacy is a real cool watch I like, as well, even if it won't speak to your heart, as it is also playing on a vintage chord...

Thank you Nicolas for your considered and insightful response! Yes, how we define innovation is clearly subjective as well. I think we say the same about LE - I meant to say a Non LE is a good thing but should be normal and not the exception.

Why make such a big deal out of this? I for one really like my Tribute DSA and in fact prefer it to the vintage because 1. it is easier to find one in good condition and(or was-in the event that the LE has sold out) 2. it benefits from the advances in mov...

... I think that the only watch that is not a "neo-retro", "retro-neo", "homage", "tribute" or whatever you want to call it, is the quartz watch... ;-) all mechanical wrist watches are descendants of something from the past... and not so new when it all c... 

And we can even discuss the level of innovation on the Freak.

But I wanted to answer / say two things: 1/ The Cal 906. I must admit that I discovered it in the lfesh very recently ( one year ago ) . Not the most beautiful, by far, but not uninteresting at all. I prepared something on that calibre. 2/ you own a Deep ...

Looking forward to your 906 post!! Well needed and will be an eye opener. A great and significant movement, and an under-appreciated watch. Actually, in metal on wrist quite atrractive, at least in the 24002-42 (or so if i get from memory numbers right) M...
