Some thoughts...perhaps some help from local Sydney Tarts group?
Hi Littlevu,
Congrats on your impeding purchase.... It should be easier than the decision to get married!
Just a few words since I'm in middle of moving our family and my computer is in transit.
Does anyone here have any experience with the watch I am looking at?
Only at the store. If I recall correctly, it is a very classic watch. Right sized and with the roman numerals very formal appearing.
Can anyone tell me if it is single or double AR? Would the AR be underneath?
I'll ask my MB contact but I think it is AR single layered and I believe it is on top.
What do I do to make sure I don't damage the movement?
Some common precautions for all mechanical movements..avoid moisture, avoid shocks, minimalize hand winding (automatics), have the watch serviced (at some regular interval which seems appropriate for you 3-4 years perhaps)
There was something about NOT changing date or time from 8 to 2 (or was it 4), I shouldn't go backwards when setting the time if the second hand is ticking? Would wear and tear be negligible if I leave the large second hand running just so I can admire the sweeping motion and not just from the proper second hand in the subwindow?
These questions all relate to the ways that the watch wheels are meshed/wear and tear. There is a often a warning about not setting the date between 2200 to 0200. Adjust the hand forward to the appropriate time not backwards if you have a continuous running second hand. If the second hand hacks, you may adjust backwards. If you leave the large chronograph seconds hand running, there is obviously some additional wear and tear.
The 7750/7751 calibre has some shortcomings that make extended use of the chronograph a bad idea. These shortcomings include:
- plastic bearing (instead of jewel) for the chronograph centre wheel
- plastic brake part to control the 12 hour accumulator wheel
- hour wheel runs in a hole in the plate rather than in a jewel or replaceable bushing
How much money am I looking at to get the watch service from an AD? How much would it cost to regulate from an AD? I just want to get a grasp of how much the upkeep will be as this will be my first auto and I really want to take great care of it. Also what is the average interval between servicing? Is it around 5yrs? Would you still service after however long intervals are, if watch is still giving accurate time? I should be thankful it's a 7750 movement as any competent watch repairer can work on it right?
The best thing about the 7750 is that the parts are readily available. The servicing cost varies from region to region from the MB boutiques. You need to ask them directly. Also the price will change over the time. My advice is to have it service with MB when the watch is still under warrantee if something should happen. After the warrantee period I would look for a competent local watchmaker. There is a group of Australian PuristS that gather regularly. Perhaps they can refer you to some of the trustworthy/competent folks around Sydney.
Let us know of your final decision....
Once I have access to my hard drive I may be able to post some pics...unless you bet me to the punch with your own new photos.
Best, Mike
