While I agree and I think Panerai is exactly doing what you were inferring to in your post:

-#1 Developing historically correct models to appeal to the die hard old schooler like 232, 249...
-#2 coming up with broader products with wider appeal to larger audience, products in this categories are often total turn-off for old schooler!
-#3 Interesting horological pieces which hopefully ALSO stay true to the brand's DNA

My question is really for category #3: would a nice in-house movement really be a turn off when put into a perfectly 'correct' model from the history?

Just because 50 years ago, Panerai never made a luminor chronograph, does it mean any luminor chronograph need to be casted off as historically incorrect? (Note that I'm NOT saying any of the current chronographs are 'correct' as far as the design DNA are concerned. I think they're mostly way too busy but I like them for different reasons!)
