Sure about info
Top side is Barenia from Haas tannery. My wife was brave to get a Barenia Birkin because it patinas unlike Epsom or Togo but it's just classic imo.
I also tapered the strap quite a bit to make the watch feels less of a hunk. Starts at 3.75mm to 2mm.
Underside is Zermatt also from Haas. I just copied Hermes lining choice. Resists sweat stains a lot more than OEM lining. It feels a lot more pleasant on your skin and smells very little because it has hypoallergenic treatment. This is biggest difference for me.

I don't understand what's the wait for PP strap wait. It's not as if the outsourced company is churning out super high quality handmade item either. I had to bite because I stupidly threw away the white gold spring bars and PP won't let you buy a new set ...

So to answer your question, yes I learnt it by myself via trial and error method. YouTube can get you to OEM quality level but paid tutorial is for the tip and tricks to make things look nicer.

Frustrations along the way for sure but leather work/hobby is relatively easy to improve quickly because the trial and error process has low cost of error.
