Officine Panerai

The thing I love most about the 721 is its stark, spare simplicity

... which makes it less like any watch I've seen -- though the point made about homages is a good one!  As an old guy, I used to see people wearing fake Panerais in the '90s and some of them were blank like the 721.  I wasn't a watch guy back then and wondered what people were doing with these big, flashy clocks on their wrists.  Then I began to learn about watches and Panerai's history with the Italian Navy, as well as to understand  and appreciate the simple, functional aesthetic.  The 721 may not be my overall favorite Panerai (249 or 587 likely) but it's close and best represents the simple, legible design aesthetic without adornment.  It's unique in this regard -- not as interesting as the Cali 249 but even more plain and simple, yet striking and bold in its way.  I remember the first time I saw a picture of the 721, before it was introduced.  It caught my eye immediately and I knew it would be something I couldn't resist.
