Officine Panerai

Yeah, there were untenable promises...

...that Panerai made to the collector group and the group took Panerai at its word. The suggestion that the Cali 249 would not be repeated was one of the greatest disappointments when the 448 came out.

I understand the frustration as Panerai overpromised to its fanbase.  But a manufactory needs to stay in business and Panerai learned if they take one of their key 'holy grail' designs from the past and make it a LE to never repeat, then only secondary sellers will benefit and the design will essentially be 'lost' to Panerai.  This doesn't seem right.

I believe the approach to the 372 is better.  Don't play to the flippers and resellers with the company's most valuable designs; rather make the watches more accessible (like Rolex with the Submariner).  Have faith in the DNA, not the LE model.  As an example, I would hope that Panerai comes out with an updated 721 with maybe an eight day movement in the future.  I'll still love my 721 and wouldn't have a problem with the next iteration.

I think Panerai faced a greater challenge with the 318 disaster as it demonstrated a level of hubris that has hopefully been corrected, but that's another story.
