I had the same experience with my Omega, Bill . . .
. . . which I acquired for next to nothing due to it's execrable condition . . . I no longer have the "before" pics, but if you saw it at a charity sale you'd think twice about how charitable you were feeling that day. One of my oldest and closest friends is a jeweler, and while his watchmaker overhauled the movement to near perfection . . . 
. . . the watchmaker's skills at restoring the case and bracelet bordered on the level of incompetence. My friend had to finish the job and restore the case and bracelet himself, which just goes to show that a watchmaker's skill doesn't necessarily carryover to refinishing skills.
